Meet the Retirees

Elsie is a 2008 mare by Holy Bull, out of Ritchie Trail.  She is a half sister to our oldest resident Private.  She has 2 offspring, Supercross and Holy Freedom.  She arrived at SWTP in 2020 from a large farm in Virginia, along with three other related mares. Although Elsie is battling cancer in several areas of her body and experiences slight discomfort, she receives daily Prevacox to help manage her pain. Once very shy, she has made incredible strides in learning to trust us and is now a cherished member of our community. Elsie is fully sponsored by our main donor, ensuring she receives the care she deserves.

Kiss is a lovely 14-year-old mare standing at 16.1 hands. Adopted by Emily Ann Beasley, who became our main rider in 2021, Kiss had a brief but thrilling career as a jumper. Although she can no longer be ridden due to bone spurs in her back, she is happily back with her old friends in our retired mare herd and remains fully sponsored by Emily Ann.
 

Seven is a 2003 mare standing at 15.2 hands. In 2009, she experienced a tragic horse trailer accident while traveling from Canada to Tampa to race, resulting in a spinal injury. Now retired and thriving at SWTP for the past 15 years, Seven is fully sponsored. Fun Fact: She is the proud mother of Teddy, who inherited her sweet personality and beautiful features!
 

Leah is a 17 hand 2002 mare. Although she never raced, Leah was trained as a show hunter but developed EPM in 2009 which left her with neurological damage and atrophied muscles in her hindquarters. She gets around just fine and loves her life with her girlfriends. Leah is currently sponsored and thriving in her new chapter.

Peggy is an elegant 18-year-old unraced mare standing at 17 hands. As the daughter of Private, she became part of our retired mare group in 2020. We often find ourselves wishing we had known her when she was younger—she would have made an incredible show horse! She also has a big personality to go with that giant body!  She has full financial support from her former owners.

1996 mare by Private Terms, out of Ritchie Trail. Private is a delightful 28-year-old mare standing at 15.1 hands. She joined our retired mare group in 2020 and is known for her sweet disposition, although she can be challenging to maintain weight on. Deeply bonded with her daughter, Peggy (Bridle Trail), she is also the sister of Elsie. Private is fully sponsored by our main donor, ensuring she receives the care and attention she needs.
 

Catusca (JC name Hawaiian Princess), a spirited 28-year-old mare standing at 15.2 hands. After racing for a few years, she was purchased by a lady from Virginia, where she enjoyed a long and illustrious polo career, playing in Virginia, Wellington, FL, and even Argentina until the age of 25! Catusca is now fully sponsored and ready to enjoy her retirement.
 

a 14-year-old unraced Thoroughbred with an impressive lineage, sired by the world-famous TAPIT and out of a stakes-winning daughter of Storm Cat. His trainer, Bob Africa, found him too slow for racing, and decided Van would excel as a show horse. He then developed mild anhidrosis and kissing spines, but is fully sponsored and loves his trail riding career.
 

Teddy is our resident goober who is always ready for some scratches!  He is a seven-year-old unraced gelding with the sweetest and goofiest personality around. He is the son of Seven, one of our beloved retired mares. Teddy is fully sponsored and SWTP will be his forever home.
